NEW DELHI, India – July 19, 2025 – Good news for everyone stuck in Delhi’s notorious traffic jams! The central government and the Delhi government have officially approved a massive plan worth ₹24,000 crore (about 240 billion Indian Rupees) to make commuting in the capital much smoother and faster. This big project (Delhi Decongestion Plan) aims to ease traffic, cut down pollution, and improve daily travel for millions of people in Delhi and nearby areas.
Officials say work on these projects will start in phases this year and is expected to be finished by 2027.
What’s in the Big Delhi Decongestion Plan?
The ₹24,000 crore plan includes a mix of new tunnels, flyovers (overpasses), extensions to the Metro train lines, and new roads. Here are some of the key parts:
- New Tunnel from Shiv Murti to Vasant Kunj: This is a very important project. A 5-kilometer long tunnel will connect Shiv Murti (near Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. This tunnel will have six lanes (three in each direction) and will allow cars to travel without stopping at traffic lights. It’s expected to cost around ₹3,500 crore and will greatly reduce traffic in busy areas like Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and National Highway 48 (NH-48). It will also connect South Delhi directly to Dwarka and Gurugram.
- Pink Line Metro Extension: The Delhi Metro’s Pink Line will get a 12.3-kilometer extension from Majlis Park to Maujpur. This will complete the entire circular Pink Line, creating a full “metro ring road.” This means people can travel across Delhi by metro without needing to change lines too many times or get out into traffic.
- Elevated Road from AIIMS to Mahipalpur Bypass: A new elevated (raised) road will be built in South Delhi, connecting AIIMS to the Mahipalpur Bypass. This will make travel towards the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) much easier and faster, helping thousands of daily commuters.
- Upgrades in Outer Delhi: Areas outside the city center will also get major improvements. New flyovers and underpasses (underground passages) are planned along the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Gurugram-Jaipur Highway. New roads connecting Rohini, Narela, and Bawana are also approved to improve connectivity in these growing areas.
- New Delhi Railway Station Makeover: The plan also includes making the New Delhi Railway Station better. While it will improve facilities for passengers, a big part of the work will focus on making it easier for vehicles to move outside the station, which is currently a very crowded area.
- Better Highway Connections: To make long-distance travel easier, new flyovers and service roads will be added to improve Delhi’s connection to major expressways like the Delhi-Katra Expressway. Road and tunnel upgrades around the IGI Airport will also provide quicker access for people flying.
Delhi Decongestion Plan – Working Together for a Better Delhi
The ₹24,000 crore cost will be shared by both the central government and the Delhi government. This joint effort shows a strong commitment to solving Delhi’s long-standing traffic problems. Officials have said that this is not just a quick fix but a plan to completely change how people move around Delhi.
With these big projects, Delhi is set to become a city with less traffic, cleaner air, and smoother daily commutes for everyone. Construction is expected to pick up pace in early 2026, bringing much-needed relief to millions of citizens.
